Bobby Baker performance
Originally at Oval House, London and thereafter at various venues (see below)
The Meringue Ladies are a troop of between 26 and 500 hand-piped meringues that have performed with Baker in various scenarios and settings since 1973. Invariably meeting a violent end, they appear as a powerful, cheerful and absurd band of women that the artist dances with, around and on.
Since 1973, the Meringue Ladies World Tour has travelled across the UK and Europe. Maybe one day they’ll get to tour the rest of the world...
Venues included:
Meringue Ladies World Tour IV (1974), Ovalhouse, London; Meringue Ladies World Tour V (1973), Ovalhouse, London; Meringue Ladies World Tour VI (1975), Garage Gallery, London;
Meringue Ladies World Tour VII (1976), Midland Group Gallery, Nottingham; Meringue Ladies World Tour VIII (1976), Birmingham Festival of Performance Art; Meringue Ladies World Tour IX (1999), Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry
