Bobby Baker retrospective exhibition
22 February – 21 April 2019
La Casa Encendida Madrid
Curated by Clara Zarza for La Casa Encendida, Madrid, Tarros de Chutney was a retrospective of Bobby Baker’s work featuring paintings, sketch books, story boards and prints made between 1970 and 2019. The exhibition included the artist’s acclaimed Diary Drawings (1997–2008), and a selection of Timed Drawings made by Baker in 1984, when her children were small, and shown here publicly for the first time.
A large-scale, site-specific mural, commissioned for the exhibition, launched Baker’s new and ongoing project, EPIC DOMESTIC – a Domestic Revolutionary Party fit for the Twenty First Century. It was accompanied by 1000 posters heralding the beginning of the Revolution, which visitors were invited to take away.
During the exhibition, Baker performed Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience (DOGME) (2015), a reappraisal of her key 1988 work, Drawing on a Mother’s Experience.
